GREELEY, Colo.—The Weld County sheriff and the county clerk say they’re running for re-election in 2014, even though the county attorney says they’ve reached the limit for consecutive terms in office.
The Greeley Tribune reports ( ) Sheriff John Cooke and Clerk and Recorder Steve Moreno announced re-election bids Wednesday.
Each was in his second term in 2007 when voters approved a change in the county’s home rule charter limiting their offices to three terms.
Moreno says he and Cooke believe the terms they were serving in 2007 cannot be applied toward the limit.
Weld County Attorney Bruce Barker says Moreno and Cooke aren’t eligible to run again.
It wasn’t immediately clear who has final authority to determine whether they can get on the ballot.
