DURANGO, Colo.—The Durango Herald’s publisher, Richard Ballantine, is stepping down.

The Durango Herald reports ( ) the 67-year-old said Tuesday that after 30 years at the helm, he will let go of his titles as CEO of the newspaper’s parent company, Ballantine Communications Inc., and as publisher of its newspapers: The Durango Herald, The Mancos Times, The Cortez Journal and The Dolores Star.

He will remain as chairman of the newspapers’ editorial board and the board of directors of Ballantine Communications, whose multimedia ventures include Directory Plus and Buzztown.com.

The board hopes to have his successor in place by mid-May.

Ballantine says current times require a company that is nimble and adaptive as more people get information online and on tablets and phones.
