SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Rockies told catcher Ramon Hernandez on Thursday that he will be designated for assignment since he lost out in the battle for the backup job to Yorvit Torrealba.

The team has 10 days to trade or release Hernandez, who is still guaranteed is $3.2 million salary.

“I know I can still play,” Hernandez said. ” You mean to say I can’t just because of spring training? I definitely believe I can still help someone. They just felt like Yovit was a better choice.”

Torrealba, who signed a minor-league deal over the winter, will be added to the 40-man roster. He was a key member of the Rockies’ 2007 and ’09 playoff teams and hit over .500 this spring.
