COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A Fort Carson sergeant who was charged with first-degree murder in a shooting outside a motorcycle club in Colorado Springs has been convicted of lesser charges.
The Gazette reports () jurors convicted John Burrell on Monday of manslaughter, tampering with evidence and illegal discharge of a firearm.
Burrell was one of six men arrested after Virgil Means was fatally shot outside the Sin City Disciples motorcycle club last year. Police say Means had left the club after a fight and was shot after he returned to look for his wallet.
Burrell’s attorney had argued that Burrell fired in self-defense. Co-defendant Christopher Mountjoy Jr. also argued self-defense and was convicted of manslaughter in February.
Two more co-defendants are awaiting first-degree murder trials. Two others pleaded guilty to misdemeanors last year.
