BRIGHTON, Colo.—More than 1,000 snakes found in a basement after a fire destroyed a Brighton home have been taken to a Thornton pet store.

Firefighters discovered the snakes after responding to a Thursday blaze at the home. Two adults and five children escaped the fire, but several dogs and reptiles were killed.

KMGH-TV reported Friday ( ) that the family used the home for a reptile business and kept animals in the basement.

“This was unique and we’re literally talking about hundreds of reptiles that are worth a lot of money,” said Brighton Fire Department Chief Mark Bodane.

“Thankfully most were caged, (we) only had a few loose snakes to deal with—but they were also aggressive,” Bodane said. “Apparently some breeds are more aggressive than others.”

The cause of the fire was under investigation. The Red Cross was assisting the displaced family.
