PHOENIX — The Rockies called up corner infielder Ryan Wheeler to their roster before Thursday night’s game here against the Diamondbacks.

Colorado also put first baseman Todd Helton on the 15-day disabled list.

Wheeler will wear No. 12. Helton’s DL appearance will be retroactive to April 20.

Colorado had been delaying a decision with Helton, who missed the past five games with a sore left forearm. The team anticipated making a decision on Helton’s status at some point Thursday. Helton had hits in nine of his previous 20 at-bats, but injured his left arm on a swing in a game last week.

Wheeler, who was acquired from Arizona for reliever Matt Reynolds over the winter, was hitting .348 with six extra-base hits in 15 games for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox this season.
