GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo.—Garfield County commissioners have approved a ban on using or selling fireworks in unincorporated parts of the county this year, with a possible exception for the weeks leading up to the July 4 holiday.

The Post Independent reports ( ) commissioners voted 3-0 Monday in favor of the ordinance after fire and emergency management officials spoke of concerns about a lingering drought and the potential for high wildfire danger this summer.

The ordinance prohibits the use and sale of fireworks, except for the period between May 31 and July 5, unless the fire danger is found to be high. Commissioners plan to reassess the fire danger later this month to determine whether to keep the exception.
