“I don’t give concerts,” Liberace said. “I put on a show.”
Now HBO returns the favor, putting on a lavish film about the famously flamboyant entertainer. Michael Douglas portrays the virtuoso pianist and all-around over-the-top star, and Matt Damon plays Scott Thorson, the young stranger he met in 1977, and with whom he had a secretive five-year love affair. Imagine two Oscar-winning actors, directed by Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh, with Debbie Reynolds, Dan Aykroyd, Rob Lowe, Scott Bakula plus appropriately outrageous wardrobe and set design.
“Behind the Candelabra” debuts Sunday, locally 7-9 p.m., on HBO.
