Regional Transportation District officials say new attention to detail and refresher courses for drivers led to a huge drop in bus accidents in 2012.
RTD’s annual Bus Accident Report categorizes bus accidents by division, type of collision, the direction the bus was moving, if it was a bus-stop incident, hours on duty and time of day. In nearly every category, there was a decrease in accidents.
Bus accidents were down 24 percent in 2012 compared to 2011 — a year in which RTD buses were involved in four fatal accidents during four days in April alone, including the death of a cyclist.
Other types of accidents with declines:
• Accidents between 8 p.m. and midnight were down 68 percent.
• Accidents entering a bus stop were down 57 percent.
• Accidents from a left turn were reduced by 40 percent.
• Accidents between a bus and a fixed object were down 24 percent.
