DENVER—Xcel Energy has agreed to pay $150,000 to settle federal safety citations stemming from a fire that killed five maintenance workers near Georgetown.
The Denver Post reports ( ) Xcel said Friday that it had agreed to accept certain citations from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. It didn’t specify the citations. An OSHA spokeswoman had no comment.
The workers were applying sealant inside a large pipe at the Cabin Creek hydroelectric plant in 2007 when a fire broke out. They workers succumbed to the smoke before they could escape.
The utility paid millions of dollars to settle civil lawsuits brought by the victims’ families. It was acquitted of criminal charges. The painting company RPI Coating Inc. agreed to pay more than $1 million to victims’ families under a plea agreement.
