Solheim Cup history

Each week leading up to the Solheim Cup, which is Aug. 16-18 at Colorado Golf Club in Parker, The Denver Post will look at past competitions in the event.

INAUGURAL 1990 SOLHEIM CUP

Score: United States 11½, Europe 4½

Course: Lake Nona Golf Club, Orlando, Fla.

Dates: Nov. 16-18

Captains: Kathy Whitworth (U.S.), Mickey Walker (Euros)

Event:The first Solheim event was shorter. It featured one day of foursomes, one day of four ball and one day of singles (eight matches). The U.S. team dominated all three days. The U.S. roster included Nancy Lopez, who won two matches; Beth Daniel, who was 3-0; and Betsy King, who won two matches and halved her singles match against Pam Wright of Scotland. The Americans had a 6-2 lead after the first two days, then won the first five singles matches to secure the Cup.
