Emergency responders are training for a disaster Wednesday at Denver International Airport.
DIA is hosting a “major medical evacuation training” exercise, with various community partners and the drill will include 10 helicopters and 150 patients, according to a DIA media release.
The exercise, coordinated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Eastern Colorado Health Care System, starts at 8 a.m. at the Signature Flight Support Hangar, 7850 Harry B. Combs Parkway.
“The exercise will be a major test of the National Disaster Medical System and will simulate the receiving, triage and transport of more than 150 patients to 11 metro-area hospitals via eight ground ambulances and 10 helicopters over the course of about six hours,” DIA said.
The day-long exercise will simulate evacuation of victims of a tornado in southern Wyoming. More than 300 people, including children, will participate in the exercise and 20 area response and emergency agencies are involved.
