With almost 40 models now on the market, hybrid vehicle sales in the U.S. increased 31 percent in May over the same month a year ago. Sales totaled 48,796, which was 3.4 percent of the total new auto sales for the month.
A total of 7,754 plug-in electrics were sold, along with 10,523 clean diesels.
The Toyota Prius Liftback continues to be the runaway best-seller among hybrids; its sales in May increased 17 percent over the same month a year ago.
Top 10 sellers of hybrids last month were the Prius with 15,330, Toyota Camry 4,265, Toyota Prius C 3,782, Toyota Prius V 3,732, Ford Fusion 3,335, Ford C-Max 3,261, Hyundai Sonata 1,817, Chevrolet Malibu 1,695, Lexus CT200h 1,623 and Toyota Avalon 1,514.
Among plug-in electric models, the Nissan Leaf sold 2,138 in May, Tesla was estimated to have sold 2,000, Chevrolet Volt 1,607, Toyota Prius Plug-in 678 and Ford C-Max Energi 450.
Volkswagen models – Jetta, Passat and Golf – were top three sellers among clean diesels in May, with sales of 3,752, 2,797 and 624, respectively. Mercedes GLK had 538 sales, just ahead of the Porsche Cayenne with 532.
25th annual Mustang Roundup
More than 450 Ford Mustangs are registered for the 25th annual Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup in Steamboat Springs Thursday through Sunday next week, Father’s Day weekend.
A scenic mountain tour is planned for Thursday, and on Friday is the Roush Driving Challenge (autocross on a closed course), followed by the evening social at the Steamboat Grand Hotel. Show and Shine is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in downtown Steamboat, with the awards breakfast on Sunday morning at the hotel.

Arapahoe show opens at 9 a.m.
Opening at 9 a.m. today at Arapahoe Community College is the annual Colorado Concours d’Elegance and Exotic Sports Car Show, benefiting Cerebral Palsy of Colorado’s Early Childhood Education Centers.
Almost 500 cars will be on display at 5000 S. Santa Fe Drive, Littleton. Featured marque this year is Porsche. The event is presented by McDonald Audi.
