DENVER—A federal judge has sentenced a man to 30 months in prison for falsifying driving tests to get driver’s licenses for unqualified applicants, forcing up to 1,400 drivers to retake the tests.
Sikiru Fadeyi pleaded guilty Tuesday to mail fraud. He told the judge he falsely certified that applicants for a Colorado driver’s license had passed written and driving skill tests.
According to the Denver Post ( ), prosecutors say the violations occurred between February 2009 and June 2011 when Fadeyi fraudulently certified to the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles that more than 1,400 applicants had successfully completed driving tests and met requirements. Those driver’s licenses were later revoked.
Applicants, many of whom couldn’t speak English well enough to pass, paid bribes that were typically $150 each for the written and driving test, according to court documents. State authorities closed the school in 2011.
U.S. District Judge Christine Arguello previously sentenced two others in the scheme, Djibrill Sana and Omar Masakira, to three years’ and two years’ probation, respectively.
Fadeyi has refused to discuss the case.
