The marriage between MakerBot, the darling of the consumer 3-D printing world, and Stratasys, a leader in professional 3-D printing, is another sign that the technology may be on the cusp of wider adoption. The companies that Stratasys would acquire MakerBot for $403 million in stock, the first major deal for the industry since 3-D printers became somewhat affordable for the home. Joining forces with Stratasys could help MakerBot bring down the cost of its well regarded Replicator printers, which sell for north of $2,000.
