CANON CITY, Colo.—Work crews at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park are assessing damage to the historic incline railway after a wildfire destroyed all but four buildings at the popular tourist destination.

The Canon City Daily Record reports ( ) the rose quartz-constructed building that housed the incline’s drives, cables and motor received considerable heat damage. Mike Bandera, vice president and general manager of the park, says the cars and track appear to be OK, but the drives and controls are destroyed.

The original toll booth also was severely damaged.

The Royal Gorge Fire started June 11 and burned more than 3,000 acres. It also destroyed 48 of the park’s 52 buildings.

The incline railway, built in 1931, is on the National Registry of Historic Places.
