DURANGO, Colo.—A former Freedom Communications executive is taking over as chief executive officer of Ballantine Communications, a family-owned media company that publishes The Durango Herald.

Douglas S. Bennett served as a senior vice president and chief financial officer of Santa Ana, Calif.-based Freedom Communications and was president of the company’s successful digital division.

The Herald ( ) reports that his appointment was announced Wednesday by outgoing CEO Richard Ballantine. He announced his intention to step down in February after 30 years of leading Ballantine Communications and serving as publisher of the Herald.

Ballantine Communications also owns three other newspapers, Directory Plus and Ballantine Digital Media, which oversees Buzztown.com.
