Three July floods, which damaged the grounds of the WOLF Sanctuary but harmed no animals, has put the nonprofit in a bind.
The sanctuary, which rescues and provides shelter for captive-bred wolves and wolf dogs, needs to raise approximately $100,000 and generate volunteer interest in repairing and rebuilding the main road, ponds and enclosures for the 28 animals on the 165-acre property.
“We need a break,” said Shelley J. Coldiron, executive director of the sanctuary, which is in Rist Canyon, west of Fort Collins. “We need funding, and we desperately need volunteers.”
Because the sanctuary sits in a valley, water funnels toward the property anytime it rains, Coldiron said. Last summer’s High Park fire prevented the vegetation above the property from holding much moisture, destroyed four structures — including three dedicated to storage and a cabin used by animal-care staff — and burned out two of the 15 animal enclosures.
