After a lengthy hiatus, has stormed back in recent years and brought along with it the full weight of ’90s lo-fi. At the on Tuesday, the trio crushed the half-full venue with its signature grunge-folk sound. Alternating vocalists Lou Barlow and Jason Loewenstein switched instruments often, each taking on guitar and vocals, while drummer Bob D’Amico pounded out the rhythm for the 90-plus minute set.

While Sebadoh’s live shows have been known for their sometimes sloppy execution, Tuesday nightap set showed a band beginning to gel nicely. They started roughly with “Magnetap Coil,” but quickly coalesced by the time they played “Rebound” early on.

With singers switching back and forth, listeners got two distinct throwbacks to the ’90s. As Barlow howled from behind his giant, perfect mess of hair, it brought back the thick emo-meets-electro-folk confessional style of Nirvana before they got irrevocably famous. When Loewenstein took the helm, the band turned into to a more Sonic Youth-based cacophony with a hardcore back.

San Diego psyche outfit warmed up the early crowd with an explosive – and sometimes dangerous – garage rock assault that was easily as impressive as the headliner. Strapless guitarist/vocalist Glen Galloway flailed and screamed upward into a high mic. His wild dancing between vocals found him on the floor, in the crowd and onstage, knocking over his mic stand and tipping over monitors. Itap obvious his choice to eschew the requisite guitar strap is more for safety than convenience – but the effect was priceless. Meanwhile, the other three band members backed it up with a tight, accessible Butthole Surfers-style.
