FORT COLLINS — Colorado State coach Jim McElwain has said the Rams could use a few of their incoming freshmen to lend a hand this season. In addition to learning the playbook, McElwain believes there is a key to getting them to that point: chaos.

“I think No. 1 is how quickly they are able to grasp the concepts, and No. 2, apply those concepts to the framework to what we need to do offensively and defensively,” McElwain said. “Where some of this comes from is the leadership of the older guys to help teach.”

Padding up. The Rams put on shoulder pads for the first time Thursday, a gradual move to their first time in full pads Saturday. They had been in helmets and shorts only.

“Here I think is a contrast to two years,” McElwain said. “I think a year ago, when we first started to put some armor on, guys actually didn’t really look forward to it, if that makes sense. Where I thought maybe that elevated our practice level today because guys were putting the pads on.”

Injury report. Middle linebacker Max Morgan (knee surgery) is working with the CSU trainers. McElwain expects the projected starter to be out another week.
