BOULDER — A Lafayette resident has filed a protest with the city challenging the validity of petitions submitted by a citizens group that would leave it up to voters in November to decide whether to ban oil and gas drilling in Lafayette.

Jon Hydeman, a city resident, seeks to disqualify the petitions because he claims they did not include a summary of ballot language as required by law.

The protest was announced in a news release by the Colorado Oil & Gas Association. Tisha Schuller, the organization’s president and CEO, said: “Poorly crafted and insufficient ballot measures do a disservice to the communities they impact. Activists challenge the industry to work honestly and transparently, and we ask the same of them.”

Cliff Willmeng, who helped organize the anti-fracking movement in Lafayette, said Friday he is confident East Boulder County United’s petitions will stand up to scrutiny.
