COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Health officials say a Colorado Springs man is recovering after he was attacked by a rabid fox while trying to protect his dog.
The Gazette reports ( ) the man was attacked in southwest Colorado Springs a couple of miles from the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo on Aug. 3, about two weeks after another fox that was hit by a car a half mile away tested positive for rabies.
Health officials say the two cases mark the first times an animal other than a bat has tested positive for rabies west of Interstate 25 in El Paso County. Several cases have been documented in the eastern part of the county.
Danielle Oller, a spokeswoman for El Paso County Public Health, declined to discuss the man’s condition but said he’s been taking medication since the attack.
