Consumer Intelligence Research Partners recently posed this question to smartphone users: “What are the three apps you use most frequently?”

As expected, Facebook, Twitter and the addictive game Candy Crush Saga were the three most cited programs.

But surprisingly, Denver-based Ibotta, a relatively unknown startup, , just behind billion-dollar social sharing startup Pinterest.

Ibotta’s smartphone app allows users to for taking polls, watching videos and purchasing certain products. In nine months, the startup has garnered 1.3 million users and awarded more than $2.5 million in cash, Ibotta CEO Bryan Leach said Monday.

CIRP notes that its survey measures actual use rather than downloads. “Yes, it’s self-reported use, yet strikes us as reasonably accurate,” the research firm said in its report.
