The last thing Merrill Smith and Jenna Stapleton wanted was for a thunderstorm to hit Fete des Fleurs and soak the 550 guests.

So they took a number of preventive measures to ensure the comfort of all who attended the black-tie fundraiser they were chairing for : flaps for the dinner tent and volunteers standing by with oversized umbrellas.

Want to know what saved the day, though? Heather Kemper Miller’s footwear. Specifically, her black rubbber .

“We didn’t want Fete des Fleurs to turn into Wet des Fleurs,” she said with a laugh, “so I’m carrying my heels and wearing these boots. If that doesn’t keep it from raining …”
