CANON CITY, Colo.—The Federal Emergency Management Agency will work on a grant to help remove safety hazards from the Arkansas River in Canon City.
According to the Canon City Daily Record (), the agency grant would to help remove debris on a mile-long stretch of the river that was affected by the June 11 Royal Gorge Fire.
The grant would cover 75 percent of the yet-to-be-determined cost. Canon City’s 25 percent match would come from its water fund.
Wood and metal debris from Canon City’s deteriorated, 7-mile-long pipeline has washed into the river over the years, accelerated by the fire. Thousands of large metal rings are strewn along the river bank and in the river.
The city council agreed to hire a contractor already cleaning up fire debris to do the river work, which is expected to take up to three weeks. A formal bid for services could be approved in October.
