IDAHO SPINGS — Even though the weather still says it’s summer, the top portion of the Mount Evans road is closed for the winter.
The 5-mile segment of Colorado 5 closed Tuesday morning. The state transportation department must close that stretch of the road the day after Labor Day under an agreement with the U.S. Forest Service.
Other key seasonal roads, including Trail Ridge Road and Independence Pass, remain open.
Tuesday marked the 49th day this year in which Denver recorded a temperature of 90 degrees or above.
The earliest measurable snowfall in Denver on record, according to the National Weather Service, occurred Sept. 3, 1961, when 4 inches of snow fell at Stapleton International Airport.
