LONGMONT, Colo.—Authorities are investigating an apparent murder-suicide involving an elderly couple in Longmont.

The Longmont Times-Call reports ( ) 80-year-old Raymond Ecker told police dispatchers Thursday he had fatally shot his wife and planned to kill himself as well because the two had been sick for a prolonged period of time. Officers who arrived at the couple’s apartment near McIntosh Lake found Ecker with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to a Longmont hospital, where he died Friday night.

Ecker’s wife, 72-year-old Judith Ecker, was dead by the time officers arrived.

According to a search warrant for the home, the man told police dispatchers they should contact the couple’s son to make arrangements after the deaths.
