BOULDER — Somewhere, Randy Newman is smiling.

The connection between height and IQ has been cracked, according to a study by researchers at the University of Colorado. They had no input from the singer-songwriter, who fashioned a hit single that was a satirical putdown of, well, not-tall people.

The modest correlation between being tall and being smart — which has been documented in studies as far back as the 1970s — is the result of two phenomena, CU researchers found.

One reason is that there is an overlap of the genes that define size and intelligence. The other is that taller people are likelier to mate with smarter people and vice versa, producing children that are likelier to have both traits.
