LARAMIE — Getting his name in the school record book is much more than an individual milestone for Wyoming quarterback Brett Smith.
“It makes me feel good because that means we’re putting points up on the board and doing well as an offense,” Smith said after throwing for four touchdowns in Wyoming’s 42-10 win over Idaho on Saturday.
Smith set a school record by netting 72 passing and rushing TDs in his career. Just a junior, Smith surpassed the previous record of 70 set by quarterback Casey Bramlet from 2000-03. He is one TD pass from tying Bramlet for the school record for touchdown passes.
After starting the game 1-for-10, Smith completed 22-of-38 passes for 295 yards for Wyoming (1-1). Three of his TD passes went to Dominic Rufran, who scored on passes of 1, 6 and 40 yards — all in the third quarter. Robert Herron caught five passes for 123 yards.
Smith also rushed for 64 yards.
Wyoming gained 564 yards total offense and converted 11-of-18 third downs.
Shaun Wick gained 110 yards on 15 carries, becoming the first Wyoming player to rush for 100 yards in consecutive games since 2008. He rushed for 101 against Nebraska the previous week.
Chad Chalich led the Vandals (0-2), completing 22-of-32 passes for 182 yards. Josh McCain rotated in at quarterback and led the Vandals with 49 rushing yards.
The Cowboys defense limited Idaho to 5-of-20 on third-down conversions and collected seven sacks for 61 lost yards.
“We wanted to get more pressure this year. We wanted to disrupt the pocket and we did that today,” Wyoming head coach Dave Christensen said.
Eddie Yarbrough had three sacks, and Sonny Puletasi had two for Wyoming. Yarbrough also recorded nine tackles.
The Vandals got within the red zone only twice during the game.
