FRISCO, Colo.—Law enforcement and wildlife officials are reminding residents in mountain towns that black bears’ appetites are getting bigger as the bruins prepare for winter hibernation.
The Summit Daily reports ( ) that during the late summer and early fall, a bear’s appetite switches into overdrive because they know they have just a few short months to layer on enough fat to survive their long winter’s nap. Bears will travel more than 60 miles in search of food as their calorie needs go from around 2,500 per day to more than 20,000.
The Breckenridge Police Department says officers have noticed over the past few years that more bears are coming to feed in garbage cans. Wildlife officials are asking residents to secure their trash so bears are not attracted to populous areas.
