An inmate armed with a homemade weapon injured three correctional officers Wednesday at the nation’s highest-security prison in Florence.
The three officers were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, said Ed Ross, spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Washington, D.C.
The names of the correctional officers and the inmate have not been released.
A Supermax staff member was escorting an inmate from his cell at 7 a.m. when the inmate produced a shank and attacked the correctional officer, Ross said.
Several correctional officers immediately responded and subdued the inmate.
Ross said he does not know the types of injuries staff members received.
Supermax holds 435 of the nation’s most dangerous offenders, including bomber Eric Rudolph, Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry Nichols and several terrorists.
