DENVER—Crews are working to improve drainage along Colorado Highway 14 near the High Park Fire burn zone with the hope of limiting mudslides in Poudre Canyon.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is replacing or expanding six culverts throughout the canyon near Fort Collins this week and removing debris before it can slide onto the roadway.

Project manager Justin Pipe tells The Denver Post ( ) the project will make the highway safer and reduce road closures and maintenance emergencies during inclement weather.

The High Park Fire, which killed one person and destroyed 259 homes in 2012, is the second-largest in state history, charring 87,284 acres northwest of Fort Collins. The lack of vegetation in the burn zone has led to dozens of mud and debris slides.
