Interview with Jan Scharnell, managing member

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: After losing my husband in December 2012, I found myself wondering what I should do. He was basically my sole income and I found myself very lost. I had been researching this business for 17 years and through my own tragedy, I put all my research together and opened Ideal Garage Sale. Even though it has been rough, I am finally seeing my dream coming alive.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: We are a nontraditional consignment store. As a consignment store. We work everything just like a garage sale — all items are priced at garage-sale prices and no prices are set in stone, we take all reasonable offers. We also sell near to everything at very low prices. We pride ourselves with great customer service and a very friendly, comfortable atmosphere. We are a year-’round garage sale. We do take donations, however we are not a nonprofit organization. All consignments are a three-month consignment and are donated to the appropriate organizations at the end of the consignment period.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: I absolutely love the people (customers and consignors) and making them smile. I also love our variety of products.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Our biggest challenge is getting the word out that we are here and we are open. Advertising seems to be a challenge for us.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: We help people of tragedy through what we are calling our “ministry.” Come in to find out more.
