An Evans man found guilty of shooting a police officer in March 2012 has been sentenced to 144 years in prison. Matthew Rockwell, 27, was sentenced Wednesday in Weld County, according to a news release from the Weld district attorney’s office.
On March 30, 2012, police were called to Rockwell’s apartment on a domestic disturbance when he barricaded himself and his girlfriend in the bathroom and refused to come out.
Police kicked in the door, at which time Rockwell opened fire, striking one officer in the shoulder, officials said. Rockwell turned the gun on himself but survived the shot to his head, the release states.
