A driver pulled over in a traffic stop has been convicted of shooting a police officer.

Larry Lynn Gomez, 34, was found guilty last week in Jefferson County of attempted murder of a police officer and first degree assault, according to a Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office media release.

A jury returned the verdicts against Gomez, who faces habitual criminal counts as well, on Friday after a four-day trial.

Gomez was convicted of a Nov. 7, 2012, incident in which he who was approaching Gomez’s car. Gomez then sped away. He was arrested two days later.

“We are very pleased with the outcome of our trial,” Jefferson County District Attorney Peter Weir said in the release. “Fortunately, in this case the officer didn’t sustain life-threatening injuries.”

Gomez is also suspected of shooting at Denver police officers on Nov. 6 in a similar traffic stop altercation. That case is ongoing.
