BOULDER — The shutdown’s impact was felt more immediately and dramatically in Boulder than many Colorado communities, with 3,539 people employed here at federally funded labs.

About 37 percent of the state’s federal lab workers live in Boulder County.

The economic impact of the labs on Boulder County for fiscal year 2012 was $743.2 million, the state’s highest. Jefferson County is second at $733.3 million.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration was shut down Tuesday, as was the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

At CU, most research programs have already receieved funding, but new grants would be frozen by a prolonged shutdown.
