SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Blizzards rolled into parts of Wyoming and South Dakota on Friday, bringing the snow-savvy states to an unseasonably early winter standstill.

The storm dumped 33 inches of snow in a part of South Dakota’s Black Hills near Lead, “and it’s still coming down,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Eric Helgeson on Friday afternoon.

Wind gusts reached as high as 68 miles per hour outside the weather service office in Rapid City, where 8 inches of snow had accumulated, Helgeson said.

Snow fell across the northern half of Colorado but didn’t cause major crop damage or disrupt repairs to flood-damaged roads. About 1.7 inches was recorded at Denver International Airport, but up to a foot fell in some parts of the mountains.

Later in the day, thunderstorms moved into Nebraska, bringing strong winds, including a possible tornado that destroyed homes.
