The ramp from southbound Interstate 25 to westbound Interstate 70 in Denver reopened Friday evening after being closed much of the day for repairs.
The Colorado Department of Transportation said emergency repairs are needed and announced the 12:30 p.m. closure of the ramp in a news release.
The agency had expected the closure to last about 12 hours, but announced at 6:30 p.m. had been completed.
“Major delays are expected on I-25 and I-70 and alternate routes are strongly advised,” CDOT’s release said.
An expansion joint within the ramp failed, more than likely due to typical wear and tear over the years, said Amy Ford, a CDOT spokeswoman.
A crew replaced the worn expansion joint, which includes cutting through asphalt.
The failed joint creates an unstable road surface, Ford said, which could make passing vehicles bounce, leading to dangerous and unsafe driving conditions.
