Interview with Jen Alexander, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I started making freezer meals for my own busy family, and several friends asked if I could help them out with some freezer meals as well. The convenience of having meals ready is just such a huge help when everyone is just so busy these days. My friends and family urged me to start this as a business to help other families like ours.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: There’s really not many options out there for healthy frozen meals that feed a family, don’t contain a slew of wacky chemicals and preservatives, are varied enough for families to enjoy and don’t cost a fortune. There are places where you can go and prepare your freezer meals yourself, but we prepare them for you. Who has three hours they want to give up on a Saturday to go prepare healthy meals with fresh ingredients so they can give their families great dinners? We think there’s a better way.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: I love that our own family gets to test and tweak new recipes constantly to see what works well for a freezer meal. My kids have really taken an interest in what goes into their food because of it. I also love that I can help other families improve their time together and still get a good, homemade meal in a fraction of the time. Having a tasty dinner together as a family should not be a luxury.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: There were a lot of setup hurdles, finding a commercial kitchen that would work with the hours I could work, licenses, getting to know the ins and outs of starting up a business that doesn’t really fit a current business model. Ultimately, though, getting the word out there without a huge corporate advertising budget is the most difficult thing. I want to keep the costs low for families. It’s hard to balance that with making sure people know about us.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: I actually have a master’s degree in theatrical lighting design — I swear, working in the theater prepares you to be able to do anything.
