An airplane crashed Sunday morning at the Telluride Airport, resulting in “extensive damage” to the plane, according to the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office. The pilot was not injured.
The sheriff’s office responded at approximately 11 a.m. Rescue workers arrived to find a single-engine turboprop piloted by a 51-year old Mount Crested Butte man, whose name hasn’t been released. The plane had crashed shortly after takeoff.
The pilot was the only person on board. The plane could not gain altitude, according to the sheriff’s department, and it hit the ground 200 yards after takeoff. It skidded 100 yards, crashing into the airport perimeter fence and some oak brush, stopping 30 yards from a steep cliff.
There was no fire.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will investigate.
