CAÑON CITY — It was 40 years ago that a meteorite struck a Cañon City garage, and residents did not want the event to go unnoticed. So they held a party.

The specimen is one of Colorado’s official 87 meteorites, though many more litter the land and wait to be discovered.

The celebration included cake, guest speakers, the man who possessed the meteor for about 27 years, and the guest of honor — the meteorite itself.

Cañon City resident Walter Griffin was the Fremont County Sheriff’s Department sergeant on duty when the meteorite hit a home on Oct. 27, 1973.
