STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo.—The pilot of a small plane that skidded of the runway at the Hayden airport says a strong gust of wind caught his aircraft just as he was landing.

Pilot Dave Lorenzen and his four passengers all walked away from Sunday’s crash at the Yampa Valley Regional Airport. They were on their way home from a girls’ hockey tournament in Aspen.

Lorenzen told Steamboat Today ( ) that the single-engine plane rose into the air and then came down sideways.

He said he wasn’t very scared because there wasn’t much to hit. Each wing hit wooden fence posts and the plane stopped in a marshy area.
