COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—An El Paso County man has been arrested on charges of fatally shooting two women about 5 miles apart in the Black Forest neighborhood northeast of Colorado Springs.

He is also accused of wounding the husband of one of the victims.

Kenneth Foy Lankford, 46, was arrested Sunday after a chase in a vehicle and on foot, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department said in a written statement.

Terry Lankford and Carol Joan Fowler, both 51, were killed Saturday and were found in separate houses.

Fowler’s husband, Thomas Edwyn Fowler, 52, was wounded and hospitalized. The nature and extent of his injuries were not disclosed but the sheriff’s department described his condition as stable.

The Colorado Springs Gazette identified the Lankfords as husband and wife.

Kenneth Lankford was being held without bail at the El Paso County jail on two counts of first-degree murder and one count each of attempted murder and assault. Online records did not indicate whether he had an attorney.

Investigators have not publicly discussed a motive. A sheriff’s spokesman did not immediately return a phone call Monday.

According to Colorado court records, Kenneth Lankford was a previous offender who was barred from possessing weapons.

In June, he was charged with several counts of possessing a weapon as well as controlled substances.

He was arrested in Telluride last summer on a charge of driving under the influence, and a warrant for his arrest was issued in September after he failed to show up in court in the case.

Lankford served over seven years in Utah prisons for aggravated assault and burglary, both felonies, as well as misdemeanor drug charges and was released in October 2008, said Stephen Gehrke, a spokesman for the Utah Department of Corrections.

It was the second tragedy in Black Forest in five months. In June, a wildfire killed two people, destroyed more than 480 homes and charred nearly 22 square miles.
