Interview with Anita Adam, president
How did you get involved in this business?
My husband Chuck’s division closed four years ago and his industry, manufacturing, has been declining for years. Being in his mid-50’s, it’s hard to start a new career. He has been a football, baseball and basketball coach for 22 years. I’ve been a team mom for that long also. We decided to gamble on ourselves and invested everything into an affordable sports store.
What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
We buy, sell and trade new and used sports and fitness equipment. Other stores do that, but we take it up a notch by doing so many other things then just sell to our customers. We also do things like bike repair, relace baseball gloves, sharpen ice skates, fix helmets and give batting lessons. Another thing we do is custom T-shirts, logos and team uniforms. We offer rentals like snowboards/boots, batting cage ($20/hour) volleyball sets, bocce ball, football equipment, pitching machines, nets, horseshoes, backpacks, golf equipment, youth hockey packages, etc. Lastly we have lay-a-way, team fundraisers and a community board. We strive to be a friendly neighborhood store, a convenient resource by doing so many things in one place. Our cellphone numbers are on the back of our business card. If someone needs something for a game at that time, call us, and we’ll open earlier or stay later. We tell people call us if you need anything — if we don’t do it or have it, we probably know where they can find it.
What do you like best about your line of work?
The relationship with people who start off as customers and after a few visits they become more like neighbors. Chuck really helps those parents who may not know the sport to understand what equipment fits best, safety tips and, at times, which league style is best suited for their son or daughter.
What is your business’ biggest challenge?
Getting enough traffic in the store. We are in a tucked-away place that doesn’t get much foot traffic.
Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
That we exist and do so much. We get so many people who come in and say, “this is a great store, you have a lot of stuff, we needed one like this, I didn’t know you were here.” It’s fun to find a place like this.
