While his career continues to skyrocket, Lamar is working to define his sound into a professional product. As he’s done on other live television performances, Lamar performed with a live band on Sunday, proving he has the talent to add longevity to his career. Songs from the critically acclaimed “good kid, m.a.a.d city” (released in October 2012) continue to have heavy rotation as Lamar’s participation in The Yeezus Tour heats up.
SZA is the latest artist signed to Top Dawg Entertainment and the record company’s only resident singer. The 23-year old vocalist from New Jersey is making some waves with her pitch perfect soprano and thoughtful lyrics.
Lamar, who is also a Top Dawg Entertainment artist, had his record company go to bat for him last week over his GQ cover story. Top Dawg felt the piece contained “racial overtones” and didn’t properly represent Kendrick as an artist. As a result the MC pulled out of the “Man of the Year” performance. The label took issue with GQ’s writer comparing the TDE conglomerate to “Death Row,” and for what they perceived as jabs about discipline and the overall perception of the Black Hippy MC’s.
