George Loegering captured this in North Dakota’s Sheyenne River last weekend.
“At first I thought, no way! It was surreal,” said the 73-year-old.
The unusual circle of ice likely formed because of cold, dense air and an — a feature that happens downstream of an obstruction and can make the water swirl.
Though it looks like a solid sheet of ice, National Weather Service hydrologist Allen Schlag said it’s actually a collection of little pieces of ice.
Loegering estimated the circle had a diameter of about 55 feet.
