DENVER—The Denver Sheriff’s Department has changed its policies on dealing with inmate allegations of deputy misconduct after the city’s independent monitor criticized officials for failing to investigate serious complaints.

Undersheriff Gary Wilson told employees on Wednesday that all grievances alleging serious deputy misconduct must be sent to department investigators.

The Denver Post reported Friday ( ) the paper obtained a 2010 report telling employees that high-ranking officials needed to approve any investigations.

The monitor said the department failed to investigate dozens of allegations of deputy misconduct over the past two years, including inmate claims that deputies choked them, sexually harassed them and used racial slurs.
