DENVER—A federal judge in Denver has ruled that a legally blind man who worked for an Aurora-based distribution company must be allowed to work as a night warehouse loader and be paid about $200,000 in back wages and interest.

The Denver Post reports ( ) U.S. District Judge Christine Arguello has ordered Beverage Distributors Co. to rehire Mike Sungaila, who had been a driver’s helper for the company for more than four years.

When BDC decided to eliminate his position and instead use contract laborers, Sungaila was hired as a night warehouse loader. But the company withdrew the offer, believing he couldn’t safely perform the functions of the position due to poor eyesight.

The job involves loading cases of liquor and kegs of beer into the back of trucks.
