A man shot during an hours-long standoff with a Mesa County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team died Saturday in an officer-involved shooting.

Deputies found an armed man when they responded to the area of 32 Road and B½ Road in Grand Junction in the early afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office.

A sheriff’s SWAT team and negotiators deployed to the area.

According to the Grand Junction Sentinel, radio traffic during much of the afternoon indicated the suspect, allegedly armed with a rifle, refused to come out of the home.

Officers said shots were fired at 3:29 p.m. and at 4:06, the newspaper reported. It wasn’t clear who fired the shots.

“Late in the afternoon, the adult male suspect was shot by law enforcement. The suspect was transported by ambulance to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival,” according to a sheriff’s office release.

The Grand Junction Police Department is leading an investigation into the incident.
