DENVER—The blood supply in Colorado is at a critical low and Bonfils Blood Center is putting out an urgent call for donations.

Demand for blood in the state spiked recently and donations have tapered off. Doctors say there is a special need for donations from people with Type O negative blood because they are universal donors who are compatible with most patients.

The Denver Post reports ( ) Bonfils had 32 units of Type O negative blood on hand on Wednesday, compared with 100 to 200 units on a typical day.
